Six Feet Under
Nathaniel Fisher: You're not even grateful, are ya?
David Fisher: Grateful? For the worst fucking experience of my life?
Nathaniel Fisher: You hang onto your pain like it means something, like it's worth something - well let me tell ya, it's not worth shit. Let it go. Infinite possibilities and all he can do is whine.
David Fisher: Well, what am I supposed to do?
Nathaniel Fisher: What do you think? You can do anything, you lucky bastard, you're alive! What's a little pain compared to that?
David Fisher: It can't be so simple.
Nathaniel Fisher: What if it is?

From Debra Weiner’s interview with Ida Lupino,...
WEINER: You were among the few women directors in Hollywood. Were there any problems?
LUPINO: I guess I was a novelty at the time and it would have been difficult to become a director then if we hadn’t our own company. But as a matter of fact, most everyone went out of their way to treat me like a buddy. After all, I’d worked with practically every crew in town since 1934. And because, well, I don’t act like a man. My way of asking a man to do something on a set is not to boss him around. That isn’t in me to do that. I say, “I’ve got an idea, and why don’t you see if it feels comfortable because I think it would be effective.”
Listen, if a woman came to you and said, “Honey, gee, I don’t know what to do. We’ve finished this and I’m not quite sure whether we should send it down or what grain I should use. I’d like to do this, but, well, what do you think?” You’d want to help me, wouldn’t you? Well, all right.
WEINER: What would you like to be doing?
LUPINO: Really, my dream is that some dear old man would see my old movies on television and leave me an oil well in his will. Then I could do good things for the people I like. And I’d want to live on a ranch. I’m definitely the small town, country type.
WEINER: Would you want to direct more films?
LUPINO: It would be a lovely hobby, wouldn’t it? Like Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. They can act whenever they want to because they are so damn rich.
I will have to get going again myself. I’ve been in front of the camera for so long. I’ve had offers to direct but they would have taken me out of the country, which would have meant leaving my home, my daughter, being away from here months and months on end. It’s a rough setup.
That’s when being a man makes a great deal of difference. I don’t suppose the men particularly care about leaving their wives and children. During the vacation period the wife can always fly over and be with him. It’s difficult for a wife to say to her husband, “come sit on the set and watch.”
